Some services take time to arrange so please plan ahead.
Students with documented disabilities requiring academic and/or exam accommodation are strongly encouraged to contact Student Affairs at the beginning of the semester. Failure to apply by October 31 or February 28 could result in no accommodation.
Vancouver Island University students with a documented disability may be entitled to reasonable accommodation. Accommodation is determined on an individual basis and must be supported by current documents from a qualified professional. One month prior to the semester start date, the student is responsible to request accommodation and provide documentation.
Reasonable accommodation may include
- Orientation to services and the campus
- Assistance with financial aid planning
- Assistance with advanced registration
- Assistance with obtaining interpreter services
- Exam accommodation
- Help obtaining assistive technology
- Arranging help for note-taking, reader, study partner
- Arranging alternate format for text books and course material
- Assistance with study skills
Students’ responsibilities
- Meet entry requirements and on-going academic standards
- Provide current documentation of disability
- Identify themselves to Cowichan Accessibility Services as soon as possible
- Bring requests for accommodation to the attention of Cowichan Accessibility Services at the beginning of each semester
- Discuss their accommodation needs with their instructors at the beginning of each semester
- Bring all requests for exam accommodation to Cowichan Accessibility Services in writing, at least two weeks prior to the scheduled exam date
- Inform Cowichan Accessibility Services of any important changes to their health or disability
You must have prior approval for exam accommodations on file with VIU Accessibility Services.
Two weeks notice is required for exam accommodations.
You may request exam accommodations using the paper form or the online booking system
- if your course is based at Cowichan campus
- online courses that have an in-person component
If your course is based at Nanaimo, you must book your exams via the Nanaimo campus assessments office.
